State Grants for Single Mothers
States have various aid programs. The eligibility requirements, application processes and award amounts depends on your state. For example, New York State’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards up to ,000 to single mothers, as well as some other applicants who meet their eligibility requirements and are state residents. Kansas Comprehensive Grants award between 0 and ,100 to eligible Kansas state residents and New Mexico Student Incentive Grant awards between 0 and ,500 a year to eligible New Mexico state residents. For more information on the grants provided for your state of residence visit your local state higher education agency.
Federal Grants and Scholarships for Single Mothers
Grants provided to students by the Federal government consist of Pell Grants, Academic Competitive Grants (ACG), Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (FSEOG). Each grant has its own requirements. Pell Grants are given to students seeking their first degree who can prove they have financial need. If you don’t qualify for a Pell Grant, you won’t qualify for any other federal grant. Academically competitive grants are based on academic performance with a grade point average [GPA] requirement of 3.0 to 3.5, depending on your year of study. The FSEOG is for applicants who have been awarded a Pell Grant but still have extreme need for more supplemental assistance. Proof of income is required.
School Grants for Single Mothers
It is common for single mothers to go back to school. Therefore, many universities provide grants for these students. Check with the financial aid office at your college or university about grant assistance. These days, most schools have specific funding set aside for these students.
Tuition Reimbursement
Employers often provide tuition reimbursement for employees, including single mothers. Check with your place of employment to see if this available. It may mean going to school part time. But if you are a single mother, that may be an appealing option.
