You Can Improve Your Future: Obama Scholarships For Moms

August 9, 2011 by

There are some bright spots that should encourage you to look ahead despite the fact that the US economy is going through some tough times. To get mothers to go back to college, the government is offering Obama scholarships for moms.

Mothers of all types have an opportunity to get a quality education. This will no doubt benefit their families and future employers. Federal aid called Pell Grants make Obama scholarships possible. Because Obama and the government are putting emphasis on getting moms to go back to school, they’ve made some changes to these grants. Unlike before, Pell Grants worth more than ,000 can be awarded.

That’s an increase of more than ,000 over the previous maximum for Pell Grants. In many cases single mothers would be low-income students, and that’s who these grants are intended to help. That’s why the government is encouraging moms togo back to school .

Both moms who work and stay-at-home moms could benefit from having money to help them go to college. To add incentives for moms to enroll in college, there are also other benefits to these grants. It’s typical of many students to go to large colleges and universities. For a single mom who didn’t have this option, it may have prevented her from going to college. However, thePell Grants consider the possibility of this.

If a stay-at-home mom wants to take courses online or a working mom wants to attend college part-time, the specialPell Grants make it possible. It doesn’t matter what you want to study, from nursing to business to education . Single moms have more opportunity, and that’s the important part. For single moms who want to start on a different path, an Obama scholarship may be the answer. Applying for a scholarship involves a few simple steps. Remember that you need to fill out the FAFSA online. It’s the application for federal student aid.

The application is free and there is a lot of information available to help you learn what is out there for you. The first ,000 to pay for youreducation is free according to the American Opportunity Tax Credit program so remember that. Consider this and the possibility of getting a grant when you’re weighing your options. Single moms who work or stay-at-home have a wonderful chance to attend college and advance theireducation .

Government grants and free opportunities are great chances for mothers to not only care for their families but also to increase the money they can earn as vital members of the workforce. Obama scholarships are meant to give women the opportunity to improve their own future and that of their family.

How to pay for college with grants

August 2, 2011 by

Grants are an excellent way to help pay the rising cost of college education. Simply put, grants are like ‘free money’ from the school itself or the federal government. Unlike federal or private loans, these grants never need to be repaid making them ideal for any student struggling to finance their higher education. Grants are given based on financial need; meaning that as long as you are accepted into a college; you can get grant money based on your family’s income. The lower the family income (called the Expected Family Contribution or EFC by the government) the more likely the student will receive more grants.

The biggest two questions that people ask regarding grants are if grants are the same as scholarships and am I eligible for any grants? Scholarships are considered merit based awards given for academic excellence, sports skill, musical talent, or another area that a student is skilled in. These awards pay for all or part of the student’s tuition; historically speaking most full scholarships are given to talented athletes that commit to play at a big sports school or academic scholars who have impeccable academic records. Of course partial scholarships are often given, every college reviews each student’s application and may personally interview them to see what makes them good candidates for potential scholarships. Grants on the other hand are given based purely on financial need; not on the student’s achievements or merits.

Determining if a student is eligible for any grants begins with filling out the FAFSA which is a government form that helps the government and the schools that a student is applying for determine eligibility and need for various grants. The form asks for information such as family income, family assets, the schools that the student is applying for (or attending), criminal history, expected graduation date, and so forth. Based on this data the government’s system calculates the EFC or Expected Family Contribution and based on that number recommends how much the family should be able to pay. With that data, the school and the government can determine the number of grants given and the amount of each grant.

The most well known grant is the Federal Pell Grant given to any student working on a first undergraduate degree that shows financial need. Schools give a variety of grants ranging from a few hundred a year to thousands of dollars a year; they may have specific names given to them or may just be a dollar amount. In 2007, a few top schools including Harvard and Stanford announced that full paid tuition grants would be given to qualified students whose families made 40k or less a year. This move prompted a huge increase in applications to these schools giving new hope to many bright students who otherwise might not be able to afford these schools or qualify for loans.

For most students, grants will only be a portion of their payment plan for their tuition. Undergraduate students get smaller amounts per year from the government while many Graduate students are eligible for over 23K in federal loans (as of 2008) a year for their further education but generally not eligible for federal grants. Schools typically offer grants for any eligible student who shows financial need but again this amount can vary widely depending on the school, tuition cost, student’s financial need, and a look at other sources of tuition money.

Grants are a great way to pay for college without worrying about high interest loans or where money will come from. Keep in mind that they generally only pay a portion of tuition each year, but every bit does count. It all starts by filling out the FAFSA form which can be done (and needs to be done each year) at http://www.fafsa.edu.gov .

Receiving Scholarships For Your Nursing Education

July 14, 2011 by

When you’re finally ready to begin your career in nursing, you will have to start school to receive the right training.  However, when you see the costs of nursing school, you may be somewhat hesitant to go on with the process.  Nursing school can be very expensive, there is no doubt.  However, there are often scholarships available to students that spend some serious time looking for them.  It is not uncommon that some scholarships may even go un-awarded because of a lack of qualified applicants.  But armed with the information in this article, you will have the knowledge of where to look to get your nursing education funded.

Start at School

If you have a program at a specific nursing school in mind, ask the people at the school’s financial aid office.  They will often have a list of scholarships; application forms may even be readily available.  Simply contact the office at the same time you start your application to the school.  Even if they do not have a list of scholarships, they can often give you some direction and tell you where their other students may have successfully attained funding for their nursing education.

Community Organizations

If you are a member of a community organization, contact them to see if they have scholarships for members (or former members).  Some private companies that service the healthcare industry, like medical uniform retailers, may provide scholarships as a service to the community.  You may be able to apply for scholarships with your spouse or significant other’s community affiliations, too.  Whatever type of organization or association you belong to, it always helps to inquire if you are eligible for any scholarships or financial aid.

Search the Web

More and more information is available on the web than ever before.  Start with entering in a general search for “nursing school scholarships”.  You will find many financial aid search sites, like fastweb.com, that will usually have hundreds of scholarship possibilities available.

Watch out – while there may be many nursing scholarships listed, you need to make totally sure that you are going to valid websites that are providing you with reputable organizations.  Some websites may impose a charge for the scholarship searches, but this shouldn’t be necessary in most cases.   You should be able to receive a good listing of scholarships without needing to pay a single penny.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

You can also go to the FAFSA website to apply for nursing student loans and grants to help defray your tuition costs.  Sometimes, you can find good scholarship resources there as well.

Play To Win

Once you have your list of these scholarship opportunities, what’s next?  Here are several basic tips to make sure that your application stands out from the rest:

Get your application in early

Completely fill in all fields on the application

Make sure that you are really qualified

Put your best foot forward on all essays

Eliminate all typos and misspellings

Don’t forget to fill in the complete, correct contact information

Tell the truth

When you’re seeking scholarships, you may find that it is easier than you thought to find available funding for budding nurses.  Since there is currently a severe shortage of nurses, many schools offer scholarships to make sure that there will be enough nurses to serve the demand in the future.  Even if you don’t find a full scholarship, when you are done with school many nursing employers will reimburse educational costs as long as you agree to stay employed with them for a specific number of years.

There are many opportunities out there, so don’t let the high cost of a nursing education stand in the way of achieving your dreams!

Hollywood’s Best High School Football Movies

July 11, 2011 by

One sheet poster: Tom Cruise as Stefen Djordjevic in All the Right Moves (1983)

High school football is a religion in many parts of the United States. Here are five outstanding high school football films that are sure to satisfy both movie and sports fans. We begin in Pennsylvania steel country…

All the Right Moves (Twentieth Century-Fox, 1983)

Tom Cruise stars as Stefen Djordjevic, a high school football player who dreams of an athletic scholarship in order to escape a dying Pennsylvania steel town. Craig T. Nelson plays the dictatorial Coach Nickerson, with Lea Thompson as Lisa, Cruise’s girlfriend. Cruise is in top form in this highly entertaining film, playing the high school senior who challenges his coach’s authoritarian rule on the football field, telling him in one scene, “You’re not God, Nickerson. You’re just a typing teacher.” All the Right Moves expertly captures the mania of high school football in the Keystone State, featuring brutal practices, feverish pep rallies, a drunken, late night raid on the coach’s home and some excellent gridiron action. Set in the fictional town of Ampipe, All the Right Moves was filmed at Ferndale Area High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Both Tom Cruise and Lea Thompson were secretly sent back to high school in order to get reacquainted with that institution, but the still relatively unknown Cruise was outed on his first day, recognized from his minor role in Taps (1981).

Great line: “Salvucci, he didn’t quit. None of us quit. I don’t know. We beat those guys asses up and down that field tonight! We got nothing to be ashamed of, right? Isn’t that right? Maybe the scoreboard doesn’t say it, but we won that game. We held them. It was just a fluke. That’s all. It’s just a fluke.” – Tom Cruise’s Stef challenging Coach Nickerson’s assessment that the players had quit on him

Director: Michael Chapman

On DVD: All the Right Moves (Twentieth Century-Fox, 2010)

Friday Night Lights (Universal, 2004)

Based on the 1990 nonfiction book of the same name by H.G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights follows the 1988 season of the Permian High Panthers in football-mad Texas. Billy Bob Thornton heads the cast as head coach Gary Gaines, with Lucas Black (Mike Winchell), Garrett Hedlund (Don Billingsley), Derek Luke (Boobie Miles), Jay Hernandez (Brian Chavez), Lee Jackson (Ivory Christian), Lee Thompson Young (Chris Comer) and Tim McGraw (Charles Billingsley) also appearing. Friday Night Lights, which won an ESPY for Best Sports Movie, superbly captures the essence of high school football in the Lone Star State, where the sport takes on a reverential, mythic quality. The coaches, players and townspeople all forge ahead in one unforgettable season as perennial powerhouse Permian vies for the Texas state football championship. Friday Night Lights spawned a television series of the same name, which began its run on NBC in 2006.

Great line: “Stop reading the news clippings. You’re small and you’re going to be smaller every week. There ain’t going to be no growth spurt between now and the first game. You’re going to use your minds! You’re going to play with your heart! And that is what you’re going to use to win the State Championship.” – Billy Bob Thornton’s Coach Gaines to his players

Director: Peter Berg, Josh Pate

On DVD: Friday Night Lights Widescreen Edition (Universal, 2005)

Remember the Titans (Buena Vista, 2000)

Based on a true story, Remember the Titans stars Denzel Washington as Herman Boone, a black coach who takes the reins of the football team at Virginia’s newly desegregated T.C. Williams High School in 1971. With racial tensions running high, Boone tries to defuse the situation when he offers ousted white head coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) a job as one of his assistants. Boone and his fellow coaches lead their integrated team to an undefeated season and a shot at the state football title. There is both triumph and tragedy in this classic sports movie, with Ryan Hurst turning in an excellent performance as the doomed gridiron warrior Gerry Bertier. Denzel Washington won a BET Award for Best Actor.

Great line: “We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football, and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts and then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let’s go to work.” – Denzel Washington as Coach Boone to his players

Director: Boaz Yakin

On DVD: Remember the Titans Widescreen Edition (Disney, 2001)

Varsity Blues (Paramount, 1999)

Texas high school football comes alive in this film starring James Van Der Beek as Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, an academically gifted student who plays second-string quarterback for West Canaan High School and its legendary football coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Mox’s father Sam (Thomas F. Duffy) is trying to live vicariously through his son while Mox, who is trying to land a scholarship at Brown University, bristles under Coach Kilmer’s authoritarian rule. There’s plenty of gridiron action, sexual hijinks and high school intrigue in this sports movie, which also features Amy Smart, Paul Walker, Ron Lester, Scott Caan and Ali Larter. Some of have called Varsity Blues a modified high school version of North Dallas Forty (1979).

Great line: “In America, we have laws. Laws against killing, laws against stealing. And it is just accepted that as a member of American society, you will live by these laws. In West Canaan, Texas, there is another society which has its own laws. Football is a way of life.” – James Van Der Beek as Mox

Director: Brian Robbins

On DVD: Varsity Blues (Paramount, 1999)

School Ties (Paramount, 1992)

Set at an elite New England prep school in the 1950s, School Ties stars Brendan Fraser as David Greene, a top quarterback who is brought in from Pennsylvania on scholarship in order to lead St. Matthew’s to gridiron glory. David is Jewish, a secret he tries to keep at the WASPish school of eastern blue bloods. Matt Damon, Andrew Lowery, Cole Hauser, Randall Batinkoff, Chris O’Donnell, Ben Affleck and Anthony Rapp play David’s less-than-tolerant teammates, with Kevin Tighe appearing as Coach McDevitt and Amy Locane as a high school femme fatale. School Ties features some credible football action, along with a cheating scandal, a love triangle and an especially noteworthy performance by a then-21-year-old Matt Damon as the virulently racist Charlie Dillon. School Ties was shot on location at Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts.

Great line: “You’re never going to forget this happened. You used me for football, now I’ll use you to get into Harvard.” Brendan Fraser’s David Greene to Peter Donat’s headmaster Dr. Bartram

Director: Robert Mandel

On DVD: School Ties (Paramount, 1999)

Easy Scholarships And The Way to Gather Them!

July 11, 2011 by

Attaining easy scholarships may not be as hard as you think, but you might have to have the right info so that you can acquire a free grant for your schooling! If you are just like ordinary people, and definitely me, I doubt that you simply possess a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 4.0…was I right (rhetorical question)?

If I am correct, you most certainly believed that you may likely either (1) certainly not fall into the campus of your inclination or (two) be given the chance to pay for the college’s tuition fees long enough to actually acquire a two or four-year degree. Nevertheless, you happen to be thankfully wrong in your analysis, as there are several methods for getting free scholarship grants if you know a way to “beat the system”, as they say.

On this page writing on easy scholarships, I will teach you the important info you’ll be expected to grasp when making your scholarship or grant research as simple as possible:

#1: First off, the fastest way to maximize your likelihood of being qualified for any scholarship or grant would be to fill out an application as soon as possible, because you’ll certainly have a lot more choices of what different types of scholarships and grants you may just be equipped to earn. People who waste time and begin the process of trying to find scholarships or grants late will most definitely get the “leftovers”, mainly because the less time you invest in your scholarship search, the less scholarship grants there might be on the market on your behalf to settle on.

#2: Yet an additional precondition for receiving an easy scholarship (based on the program) are the following: (1) you are required to be a citizen of the USA or perhaps a permanent resident here, (two) you are required to either be considered a senior in high school or graduated with a diploma or degree and/or General Educational Development (G.E.D), and (three) have a GPA of at least a 2.0-2.5. Many, if not most, of all scholarship programs will reject people who usually do not satisfy the above 3 qualifications! However, you can get scholarship grants that won’t need any of these requirements.

Just so you know, contingent on the scholarship program, you may very well be denied in the event you don’t possess the best suited GPA (for instance, a 3.0, so be sure that you check out all the necessities before you submit your application.

#3: If you wish to raise your chances of getting an easy grant, refrain from scholarships which may have way to many challengers, such as a lot of athletic-related grants, virtually all merit scholarships, and just about any scholarship program with a exceptionally high demand with tons of competition. Having to handle competitors would mean your possibility of winning is going to be slim, and the main reason for you being on this webpage would be to read about the fastest way to acquire a grant, is it not?

#4: Rather than focusing on the “best of the best” scholarship programs, direct attention to easy scholarships that are most likely not as prominent but nonetheless provide a fantastic payout (along the lines of ,000-,000 scholarships and grants). Besides that, utilize scholarships which are available as part of your local area, school, marketplace, job, or every other place giving funding to people who desire to enroll in college. In spite of this, ensure that you satisfy all of the prerequisites of whatever scholarship you happen to be applying for, in spite of your competition or the payout!

#5: Realise that there are actually many different scholarship and grant programs, as some require you to send in lengthy applications and craft essays with a large amount of pages, and then you’ll find absolutely free scholarship grants (scholarship lotteries) where you never have to complete none of those tasks! Fortunately for you, you’ll find websites online that include such a service, as the only thing you’ll have to do is enter in a valid name, house address, phone number, as well as a legitimate e-mail address and you’ll be all set after that!

Whenever you complete the aforementioned, you’ll be presented with a menu of varied schools and programs that may possibly suit whatever it is that you’re trying to get started with. Regardless of whether you elect to take a look at the info available or not, you’ll have the same odds of winning a ,000 scholarship that all of the other appliers have!

Are you currently in the hunt for Easy Scholarships and you happen to be thrilled with the critical info you just looked at? If that is so, head over to the hyperlink and start to give yourself a possibility of collecting to a max of ,000 in a scholarship program, as it only takes 2 minutes to register for the program that just may produce positive changes to your life!

The program included a college fair and college panel, with college and university admissions officials answering student questions about college admissions and financial aid for college. The panel discussed various elements of the college application process: timelines, common applications, early action and early decision, interviews, college visits, college selection, and more. One recurring comment from panelists was that students should listen to and follow their parents parameters and advice about the college process, but they are urged to own the process—to take charge and ownership, and be assertive in their college search and application process. Why Should You Apply School Grants

July 11, 2011 by

Everyone has a right to have a good quality education. But having the kind of education and learning we would like is not always very easy. It happens that almost all the private schools are quite expensive and beyond the reach of many individuals who are financially weak. But with the right type of information and facts, school grants could possibly help.

For these people the federal government comes to their help. A substantial amount of money is set aside in way of student grants for the people who cannot pay for their children’s schooling. These grants doesn’t have to be paid back to the government.

To be qualified for a School Grant individuals have to fulfill the different formalities of different organizations that are authorized to give such grants. If these organizations deem fit the eligibility of a person they then sanction a grant to that person.

These School Grants are given the nod in accordance with different criteria such as the family income or earning capacity of the individual seeking grant etc. The people looking for grant are needed to submit the FAFSA form i.e. a Federal Application for Student Aide. This is a detailed form that covers all the information regarding the economic condition of an individual and the grant is approved based on this form only. These forms readily available for download online or physical copies can be availed from the counseling room of the schools.

The FAFSA form is very detailed and needs several sections to finish. You should complete everything to the very best of your knowledge as extensively as possible. An unfinished form aren’t going to be processed. While you sit down to complete the form make sure you have all the paperwork you’ll need like pay stubs from your job and/ financial statements from your parents.

Along with the college and higher education the Schools Grants are also approved for a number of other purposes.

Education in the public school just isn’t adequate and private school education is required to grow in life and to not let tuition fee obstruct the path of progress, School Grants assume their value and become the key to success. To the contrary School Grants at the graduate level are much easier to obtain than at the early education stage. The educational institutions provide all information about their standards for allotting grants.

A variety of good programs like the Pell Grant program are offered by Federal Government for facilitating school education to the needy. This grants for school was built to not cover the total cost of a year’s education but to pay for a major part of it to ensure educating a child is not a burden on the parents.

Yet another school grant offered by the federal government is the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. Of the many school grants offered by the government the FSEOG is probably the best one. The FSEOG pays nearly 75% of the tuition while the school it works will covers the rest of the amount.

But when it comes to school grants or college grants, federal grant isn’t the only player on the field. State funded grants, scholarships and grants funded by private industries can also be found. With the right information, access to good education is not very difficult.

Expunge Criminal Record – Top Ten Reasons To Have Your Criminal

July 11, 2011 by

Now is the time to have your criminal record expunged. While there are many
benefits to having a clear criminal history, these are the most cited top
ten:

1. To Obtain Employment. With the economy still down and countless
individuals looking for work, there are many more job applicants than job
opportunities. Since most employers conduct thorough background checks,
having a criminal record is one of the quickest ways to land your resume or
job application in the trash can.

2. To Obtain A State License. Having a criminal history can prevent you from
obtaining a state license, including a nursing license, real estate license,
or contractor’s license, to name a few.

3. To Obtain Loans. Many lenders require that you divulge your criminal
record as part of their application process and risk assessment. With a
criminal history, you can end up with higher interest rates, or even be
prevented from getting a loan altogether.

4. To Be Eligible For More Educational Opportunities. Most colleges, graduate
schools, and vocational schools require that your reveal your criminal record
on your application. Again, in such competitive times, having that mark
against you can stop you from getting into the program of your choice. If you
have a scholarship when you pick up a record, there is a great possibility
you will lose it. If you are already enrolled in a program, you can be kicked
out.

5. To Be Eligible For More Housing Opportunities. This works in two ways.
First, you may not be eligible for governmental housing assistance with a
criminal record. Second, private landlords are not obligated to rent to you
if you have a criminal record. There are no statutes preventing
discrimination against former “criminals.” Many, if not most, landlords run
background checks on prospective tenants and having a record can prevent you
from staying where you want or need to live.

6. To Avoid Sentence Enhancement. Although most people don’t like to think
about being involved in the court system again, let’s face it, it happens!
Having a criminal history will be counted against you during sentencing in
any subsequent crimes, and courts tend to go much easier on first time
offenders than repeat offenders.

7. To Join A Professional Organization. A number of professional
organizations conduct background checks prior to allowing individuals entry
into the organization.

8. To Travel To More Places. Did you know that travel to Canada and many
other countries is restricted with a criminal record? This is not anything
new. Many countries deny entry to people with criminal records regardless of
how minor the charges. For example, Canada will not allow people in with DUI
or drug possession convictions on their records.

9. To Be A More Attractive Date. Landlords, employers, and financial
institutions aren’t the only ones looking online to dig up dirt on people.
Many people meeting both online and offline use the internet to investigate
potential dates. In my practice I’ve heard plenty of stories of cancelled
dates because: “You didn’t tell me you had a criminal record!”

10. To Obtain Personal Redemption/Peace Of Mind. Many individuals feel
uncomfortable having their past mistakes hanging over their heads
indefinitely, are embarrassed or worry about their past, and are even
stigmatized when people find out. This is the reason I hear the most from
people as to why they want to expunge their criminal record. Peace of mind is
priceless.

Attendiing A Beauty School

July 11, 2011 by

or even being the employee of an existing salon or store, you may find it easier for you to land a job or start your own business if you have some beauty education. For that reason, you may be wondering whether or not you should attend a beauty school.

When it comes to determining whether or not you should attend a beauty school, there are a number of important questions that you may want to take the time to ask yourself.  These questions may help make it easier for you to decide whether or not beauty school is right for you.  A few of the questions that you should ask yourself are touched below.

Before reading up on the questions that you should get answers to, to determine if beauty school is right for you, it is important that you know about beauty schools.  Beauty schools actually come in a number of different formats.  For instance, it is more than possible for you to attend a two year or a four year college or university to get a degree in fashion or beauty.

In addition to attending an accredited college or university, you may also be able to find schools that often referred to as beauty training schools.  These types of schools regularly offer a wide range of different training classes, like classes for hair care, nail care, and so forth.  With a beauty training school, you often receive a certificate of completion, which is similar to a degree.

Now that you know you have a number of different options when it comes to attending a beauty school, you may want to refocus on the questions that may be able to help you determine your goals and if those goals include beauty school.

One important question that you want to ask yourself is what you want your career future to be like.  You may want to work as a beauty consultant now, but do you still want to be doing so in ten years?  If you are interested in having a long-term career in the fashion and beauty industry, it may be well worth it for you to attend a beauty school or even get a degree from an accredited college or university.

Location is another question that you want to ask yourself, when trying to determine if beauty school is right for you.  If you are unwilling to relocate to another area of the United States, is there are college, university, or beauty school located near where you live?  If there is not, you may be unable to get the beauty education and training that you were hoping for.  Of course, you don’t want to give up though.

A number of high school and community colleges have courses that you can take.  Although you may not necessarily get a degree or a certificate of completion, you may walk away with some valuable training that may you help achieve your career dreams.

Can you afford to attend beauty school is another question that you should ask yourself.  Beauty schools are not always cheap, but at the same time, they aren’t always expensive either.

If you are interested in walking away with a cosmetology degree from a two year or a four year college or university, you should expect to pay normal college tuition fees.  The good news about this is that you often have access to grants, financial loans, and scholarships.  If you are on a budget, you may want to think about attending a beauty school or at least taking a few beauty classes at a nearby establishment that offers them.

The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many that you will want to take into consideration.  Going to beauty school and receiving a certificate of completion or a degree is something that will likely help you for years to come, especially if you are interested in a beauty focused career; however, the decision to attend beauty school is yours to make.

Be Ready When Opportunity Knocks!

A friend of mine recently bought a fabulous house in Mandeville at a bargain price. We’ve both been talking for years about home ownership. Unfortunately for me, I was not in a financial position to quickly bid for the house, while my friend was ready with her money. It seems that good opportunities always pass me by. I’m convinced that luck is not on my side, and I’m tempted to just give up trying.”

Sometimes it may seem that opportunity and luck favour the few. Is it possible that there is some unwritten universal law that decides whom lady luck will smile upon and fortune will bless?

Definitely not! The reality is that most people who are successful didn’t achieve their objectives by just being lucky. They had to put in many years of persistent, hard work in order to be in a position where they could grab the opportunities as they passed by. It takes a lot of effort to be in the right place at the right time.

Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s said in his autobiography, “I was an overnight success all right, but thirty years is a long, long night.”

I have met several people who complain that they can’t achieve financially, but a closer look reveals that they have done very little work towards making it happen. You have to lay the groundwork so that when a big opportunity knocks at your door, you are ready.

How do you prepare yourself to achieve your goals? In his classic book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill says that you need “no great amount of intelligence, no particular amount of education, and but a little time or effort. He outlines four things you must possess in order to be successful:

1. A definite purpose backed by burning desire for its fulfillment
2. A definite plan, expressed in continuous action
3. A mind closed tightly against all discouraging influences including negative suggestions of relatives, friends and acquaintances
4. A friendly alliance with one or more persons who encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose

Put simply, to be able to put opportunity on your doorstep you have to:

- be clear and passionate about what you want,
– make a plan how to get what you want,
– persist despite all the setbacks that will discourage you,
– create a network of people that can help you to get what you want.

Let’s look at some common financial goals and some practical steps that you can do to lay the groundwork to seize opportunity when it comes:

Buying a House

- Be specific about the type, price range, and location of the house you would like to own
– Visit the National Housing Trust (NHT) to see if your contributions are in order, and how much you can qualify for
– Work with a financial planner to invest towards the down payment amount needed
– Start saving with a building society so that you may be able to access a lower-interest rate mortgage
– Get a pre-approved mortgage from the building society
– Establish links with home owners or security guards in areas where you would like to live, and ask them to let you know whenever a place is up for sale
– Visit auctions for foreclosures
– Have realtors looking out for opportunities for you

Further Education

- Do research on the various institutions that may offer the courses you are interested in
– Find out all the scholarships or grants that are available and get details how you can qualify for them
– Find out if your workplace offers any study assistance or scholarship plans
– Work with a financial planner to save towards the school fee

Starting a Business

- Design a simple business plan that clearly outlines what you want to achieve
– Apprentice with someone who is already in the area of business you wish to get into
– Use the internet to get information on business opportunities
– Visit Jampro or the Jamaica Business Development Centre to get information on technical assistance, funding opportunities and other advice
– Join organizations like the Young Entrepreneurs of Jamaica or the Small Business Association to learn from other persons in business
– Join service groups like the Kiwanis, Rotary or Lion Club to network with successful business people

Whatever your financial goals may be, put your plans in place now. The world is not short on opportunities to help you to succeed.
