New Charter Chapter Opens for National Art Honor Society in Katy

Pope John XXIII High School recently kicked off their brand new “charter” chapter of the National Art Honor Society with the spring inductions of 28 new members. Two senior inductees, Chris Panaligan and Gen McCormick received art scholarships! Nell Bednarz, a local Katy artist, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.
The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is sponsored by the National Art Education Association (NAEA), comprised of over 20,000 active art educators and administrators throughout the nation.
Pope John XXIII High is quickly becoming an artistic force within our community: Twice winning first place at the Katy Rice Harvest Festival parade float contest, hosting two fine art dept. showcases and the Division 3A district 6 TAPPS* art meet. The Roaring Lions also captured first place in district and tenth place in the state art meet in Austin. Chaired and directed by Cyndy O’Donnell, recipient of the NAEA 1997 NAHS Sponsor of the Year Award, the visual arts department has become quite competitive. Ms. O’Donnell is very proud of what her students have been able to accomplish, something very visible as you walk around the school.
The new high school, only 5 years old, is the first Catholic high school to be established within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in over 40 years, and the only Catholic school in Katy. Pope John XXIII teaches and requires community service projects, even within the art dept. These service projects include: Support the Troops projects, support of the Katy Krause Teen Center, and the Pro-Life Gabriel Project Christmas Card contest and sales. Their winning designs and participation were honored by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo with special archdiocesan service certificates for the past two years.
This year Pope John XXIII will celebrate their second graduation. The baccalaureate Mass will be held on May 22nd at the beautiful Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, in downtown Houston. The graduation ceremony will be held on May 23rd at Pope John XXIII High School campus, on Grand Parkway and Franz Rd.

State Grants for Single Mothers
States have various aid programs. The eligibility requirements, application processes and award amounts depends on your state. For example, New York State’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards up to ,000 to single mothers, as well as some other applicants who meet their eligibility requirements and are state residents. Kansas Comprehensive Grants award between 0 and ,100 to eligible Kansas state residents and New Mexico Student Incentive Grant awards between 0 and ,500 a year to eligible New Mexico state residents. For more information on the grants provided for your state of residence visit your local state higher education agency.
Federal Grants and Scholarships for Single Mothers
Grants provided to students by the Federal government consist of Pell Grants, Academic Competitive Grants (ACG), Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (FSEOG). Each grant has its own requirements. Pell Grants are given to students seeking their first degree who can prove they have financial need. If you don’t qualify for a Pell Grant, you won’t qualify for any other federal grant. Academically competitive grants are based on academic performance with a grade point average [GPA] requirement of 3.0 to 3.5, depending on your year of study. The FSEOG is for applicants who have been awarded a Pell Grant but still have extreme need for more supplemental assistance. Proof of income is required.
School Grants for Single Mothers
It is common for single mothers to go back to school. Therefore, many universities provide grants for these students. Check with the financial aid office at your college or university about grant assistance. These days, most schools have specific funding set aside for these students.
Tuition Reimbursement
Employers often provide tuition reimbursement for employees, including single mothers. Check with your place of employment to see if this available. It may mean going to school part time. But if you are a single mother, that may be an appealing option.

Single Moms fast track to a better job and future for you and your children in 3 months!
July 11, 2011 by admin
Some time back I watched my daughter, a single ( divorced) mother of 5 small children struggling to provide for her children. Having only a high school diploma, she worked a low wage job and struggled each payday on who would get paid how much, because she could not afford to pay all the bills. Though she kept most of the bills paid, just barely, she could not afford any extras. When the children asked to rent a movie she typically had to say no. Renting movies and even just driving to the nearby park were luxuries that she could not afford. Then when the economy took a plunge in late 2008 she lost her job. After 6 months of unemployment she took the first job anyone had offered in some time. She became a floor worker at a local Bingo hall paying $ 35.00 a night plus tips. Certainly not much to pay $ 700 in rent, a $ 200 light bill, not counting water and trash bill, phone bill, and household food and personal hygiene needs of the family. It was a given with 5 children she could not take 4 or 5 years for a college degree. Her ability to earn more money would have to be a vocational training on the ” fast track”. After several months of depression she discovered ” entry level” jobs that were in high demand, and most only required 2-3 months to complete the training! Better yet her local one stop career office even had scholarships and/or vocational training grants so the training cost to her would be nothing!
In order to get the training grant she had to select training for a job that was in high demand for the area. It so happened there were alot to select from.
To complete a training program in 3 months…she could select to be a Phlebotomist, an insurance agent, an insurance customer service representative and many others. To complete more extensive training through the grant program she could select dental hygeinist, xray tech, pharmacy tech, occupational therapy tech or numerous others. These more extensive training programs were a year to 18 months in length.
She decided to take the 3 month Phlebotomy training first as a means to begin earning $ 13.00 an hour at the local hospital. Then after working several months and getting more financially stable she could continue on as an Xray tech or Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic ( another course offered- 18 month training).
Any one can do this also… Phlebotomy training is on the average 3 months long. Half of this time is spent in the classroom and the other is spent actually work at the hospital in the blood lab drawing blood specimens as ordered by the doctor. After completing the classroom and the work in the blood lab ( typically 3 months), you graduate. Typically you can realize a job at the very hospital you did your training at because they now know you from your 1 month or so of working while a student.
THis is just one example of fast track method of better pay and a better life for your family.
The typical phlebotomy training class id $ 500- 0.00 total and only 3 months long! After that you are making a better paycheck and most hospitals where you’d be working offer full medical/dental benefit packages!
So, ok, you might have to stay working the minimum wage job while training as a phlebotomist for that 3 month training duration. But three months is a short duration when there is a light ( like this) at the end of that tunnel
Also, class is not every day in Phlebotomy class, typically it is only 3 days a week for one half of the day!
CHeck out your local one stop career center for short high demand vocational training. Also call your area hospitals to ask if they offer Phlebotomy training classes. Call the blood lab to check for this training.
You’ll be glad you did when you too can fast track your way to a better paycheck!

Obama Scholarships For Moms: A Way To Improve Your Future
July 11, 2011 by admin
Despite the hard times caused by the US economy right now, there are some bright spot ahead that you should look forward to. To get mothers to go back to college, the government is offering Obama scholarships for moms.
The opportunity is available for all mothers to get a quality education that will benefit their families and future employers. Federal aid called Pell Grants make Obama scholarships possible. By making some changes to the Pell Grants, Obama and the government put emphasis on encouraging moms to go back to school. Pell Grants worth more than ,000 can now be awarded.
That’s an increase of more than ,000 over the previous maximum for Pell Grants. Many single mothers are low-income, and that’s the group that Pell Grants are intended to help.
That’s why the government is encouraging moms to go back to school. Having money to go to college could benefit both stay-at-home mothers and working mothers. To add incentives for moms to enroll in college, there are also other benefits to these grants.
Large colleges and universities obviously attract many students. Many single mothers have been prevented from going to college because this wasn’t an option for them. However, thePell Grants consider the possibility of this. Making it possible for working mothers to go to college part-time and for stay-at-home moms to take courses online is what these special grants do.Education , nursing, business and more are all options. It doesn’t matter what you want to study. More important than the major is that now single moms have better opportunities to study.
For single moms who want to start on a different path, an Obama scholarship may be the answer. There are simple steps to look into applying for a scholarship. Remember that you need to go online to fill out the application for federal student aid called the FAFSA. The application is free and there is a lot of information available to help you learn what is out there for you.
The American Opportunity Tax Credit program states that the first ,000 of youreducation is free, so keep that in mind. When weighing your options, think about this as well as the possibility of getting a grant. By having the chance to go to college to advance theireducation, single moms who are working or stay-at-home now have a tremendous opportunity. Government grants and free opportunities do two things. They help moms better care for their families, and they increase the money that moms can make as key members of the workforce. Obama scholarships for moms give women the chance to improve the future for themselves and their families.

The Hunt For Student Loans, Grants, And Scholarships Begins
July 11, 2011 by admin
If you plan to attend college for the first time in 2011 or have a family member who will, you’re about to embark on student financial aid season.
If you’re looking for money for college and want to apply for financial assistance, your first stop should be the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA. All federal student loans, federal grants, and other forms of federal student aid are tied to this form.
Federal Student Aid
The FAFSA can be filled out and submitted online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA is available free of charge, and submission is also free. The federal deadline for submitting your FAFSA is June 30.
You don’t need to know which college or university you plan to attend in order to fill out or submit the form, but you will need to refer to your 2010 tax return. If you’re a dependent of your parents, you’ll need to have the 2010 tax return of your custodial parent(s) or the parent who claims you as a deduction, even if this parent doesn’t plan to help you pay for college.
Once you submit your FAFSA, the Department of Education will generate a Student Aid Report (SAR) that summarizes your and your parents’ financial information. You can choose which schools receive your SAR, and you can add schools to this list at any time.
The schools that receive your SAR will analyze your financial information and generate a financial aid package based largely on the school’s cost of attendance and the determination of your ability to pay. (Some schools also offer non-need-based financial aid, which is awarded on the basis of merit rather than on your financial need.)
Federal grant assistance is reserved for low-income and financial needy students. Most students, however, will qualify for federal college loans.
Federal Stafford student loans are available in both need-based and non-need-based versions. Need-based subsidized Stafford loans are reserved for students who demonstrate financial need. Non-need-based unsubsidized Stafford loans are available regardless of financial need. There’s no credit check or co-signer required for Stafford student loans; you take out these loans in your own name.
State Financial Aid
Some states also use the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state student loan and grant assistance programs. Although the federal deadline for submitting the FAFSA is June 30, many states have earlier filing deadlines, with some falling as early as Feb. 15, 2011.
Other states have no specific application deadlines but award state-funded student aid on a first-come, first-served basis, processing college aid applications only as long as there are still state funds available to distribute.
Parent Loans
The federal government also offers parent loans, known as PLUS loans, for parents who want to help their undergraduate student pay for college.
Although the Education Department doesn’t require you to have filled out a FAFSA in order for your parents to apply for a PLUS loan, many schools will require it. Such a school will not approve or certify an application for a PLUS parent loan until a completed FAFSA form is on file for the student.
As with federal student loans, repayment on federal PLUS loans can be deferred until you, the student, graduate or leave school.
The 1–2–3 of Getting Financial Aid for College
1) Complete Your FAFSA — Carefully
Filling out the FAFSA can be time-consuming, and it requires you to have a good deal of documentation on hand.
Since you’ll be submitting your FAFSA to the federal government, just like a tax return, it’s highly inadvisable to misstate or misrepresent your financial information on the FAFSA in any way. Irregularities in a FAFSA form are flagged and must be corrected before the form can be processed, delaying your financial aid application.
If you’re awarded grants, student loans, or other financial aid based on false or incorrect information that you submitted on the FAFSA, you may be required to repay any over-allocation of financial aid immediately. If the misstatements are determined to be deliberate or egregious, you may be subject to fines and other sanctions.
2) Search for Scholarships
While your FAFSA is being processed, begin hunting for scholarships. Scholarships are available for virtually all types of students in almost every field of study. Some scholarships are need-based, others are merit-based, and some are a combination of both.
Since scholarships provide you with award money that doesn’t need to be repaid, like a student loan, you can think of scholarships as “free money” for college.
Use an online scholarship search engine that keeps an updated database of scholarships and lets you search that database for free. The best online scholarship search sites routinely list millions of scholarship listings with billions of dollars of award money available.
3) Only Use Private Student Loans as a Last Resort
Once you receive your school financial aid package, make sure to take advantage of all your federal and state student aid options before you turn to higher-cost financial options.
Specifically, you should maximize your federal student loans before turning to the non-federal private student loans offered by banks and other for-profit private lenders.
Federal college loans offer fixed interest rates that are generally lower than the variable interest rates offered by private student loans. Federal loans also offer more flexible repayment options than the typical private student loan program. You should only turn to a private college loan when all your other federal and state student loan options have been exhausted.

“The Girl Next Door”.
This movie was released in 2004 and was directed by Luke Greenfield. This movie can be basically being described as a teen comedy. This movie tells the story of Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch) who has great plans for the future. He aims to study in a university by getting a scholarship. He starts to date his new neighbor Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert). Later he gets the knowledge that she is an ex- porn star. Events take such a turn that a short of breakup happens between them and she leaves for a new city with his ex-boyfriend porn producer Kelly (Timothy Olyphant). But the cupid still remains in his heart…. So he follows Danielle and fate plays all short of things for them. Kelly plays all short of games against Mathew. He looses the scholarship and finds himself in a lot of mess. What happens next is something that you have to see in the movie.
The movie is at best described as a teen comedy and I think that there is too much of glamour associated with the porn industry. This is something that should not be encouraged. Well as for the story of the movie there are some parts that are good but some parts seem to be just average. The performances are average. And overall the movie is just OK to watch. Not much things are to be expected from this movie.
“Shallow Hal”
Released in 2001, this movie is directed by Farrelly brothers. This movie is a romantic comedy. This movie is the story of two friends, Hal Larson (Jack Black) and Mauricio Wilson (Alexander). They both have the habit of wooing beautiful women. Well it was during the death of his father that Hal resorted to the habit of wooing all those girls who were physically beautiful. Then he comes in contact with a self help personality who is Tony Robbins. It happens so that Tony does some magic and hypnotizes such that Hal will only be able to look after the inner beauty of the girls. So he marries to an extremely obese lady, Rosemary. Then after some days Hal looses his hypnotic effect. Well you have to watch the movie to see what happened next.
I think that the movie was expected to be comedy but instead it turned out to be an emotional movie. It is made with a message within itself about the inner beauty of the individuals.
“There’s Something About Mary”
This movie was released in 1998 and was directed by the Farrelly Brothers.
Ted (Ben Stiller) has a prom date with Mary (Cameron Diaz) whom he fancies a lot. But the date goes to a premature end with a zipper misgiving. Years pass by but his love for Mary does not end. He then hires a private detective to track about her. The role of the private detective is played by Pat Healy (Matt Dillon). He tracks her down and finds out that he is working as an orthopedic surgeon. Well the story takes a different turn with Pat Healy falling in love with Mary. He tries a lot to woo Mary. Well now the story takes some amazing turns and you have to watch out the movie to know what it hold next.

Great information on Marion Jones
July 11, 2011 by admin
Marion Jones:
Marion Jones was born in Los Angeles, California on October 12, 1975. Since the 2000 Summer Olympics, Marion Jones has been considered the fastest woman on Earth, and arguably the best female athlete in the world. Marion Jones is able to outrun almost anyone on the track. However, she wasn’t able to flee the heartbreak and anger that stained her childhood.
Without a doubt, for years Jones followed her absentee father, George Jones, who left the family when she was only two years old. Unfortunately he showed no concern in forming a bond with his daughter. Jones’ mother, Marion, remarried Ira Toler when the young Marion was five years old, at last giving the child a father figure. Nevertheless tragedy struck seven years later when Toler past away of a stroke.
Jones was able to escape her grief and anger on the track. In 1991, when she was just 15, she ran the 200 meters in 22.87 seconds, breaking the national high school record. She vacillated later that year at the TAC Nationals, placing fourth in the 200 and eighth in the 100. Coaches were impressed by her potential, and yet came knocking. Her mother hired Elliott Mason as a private coach.
Jones’s track career was endangered when she failed to show up for a random drug test, saying that the letter notifying her of the test never reached her. For this reason, she was prohibited from the sport for four years. Her mother hired Johnnie Cochran, who effectively fought for her reinstatement. Unfortunately not soon enough. Since Jones soured her track career, she turned her attention to basketball.
She led her high school team, once scoring 48 points in a single game, and earned a scholarship to the University of North Carolina. With her quick feet and scoring touch, she cemented her place as starting point guard as a freshman and led the team to the national title. She red-shirted (didn’t play in one competition/game) her junior year to train with her former track coach, Mason, for the 1996 Olympics. However, the basketball coach at UNC persuaded her to join the team in Colorado for the World University Game trials. Jones broke her foot twice—once during the trials and again in rehab.
While on the sideline, Jones hit a low point, substantiated by the teardrop tattoo she had emblazoned on her left shoulder. Her luck seemed like it was about to turn when she met C. J. Hunter who was a world-champ shot putter and was working as a coach on the UNC track team. They created an instantaneous bond and started dating, regardless of a university rule forbidding coach-athlete relationships. They thought they were keeping the affair confidential, but head coach Dennis Craddock enforced Hunter to make a choice: the team or Jones. He chose Jones, and they were married in 1998.
The union raised eyebrows. Hunter, who has two children from a previous marriage, is seven years older than Jones and is known for being unapproachable and withdrawn. Jones, on the other hand, is warm and amicable.
Hunter persuaded Jones to give track another try, and she relinquished her last year of basketball eligibility and started running again. She won the 100 meter and the long jump at the nationals in 1997.
At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, Jones made history. She was awarded three gold medals, winning the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 1,600-meter relay, and two bronze medals, in the long jump and the 400-meter relay. She grew to be the first woman to win five medals at one Olympics.
Hunter removed himself from Olympic competition a month before the 2000 games began, after knee surgery. Soon afterward, it was discovered that he had failed four tests for the anabolic steroid nandrolone in the route of the summer. He denied that he had taken steroids, and his nutritionist, Victor Conte, held responsible the results on an iron supplement. “Conte was the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO), which has since become the subject of a federal investigation for allegedly providing steroids to dozens of athletes.”
Jones and Hunter became distant in June 2001 and divorced not long after that. She and sprinter Tim Montgomery, who broke the world record in the 100-meter dash in 2002, lived together for several years. Montgomery, who has never tested positive for drugs, has since been charged by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency of using illegal steroids, saying that based on testimony given during the BALCO investigation. He is now facing the likelihood of a lifetime ban. “Jones recently married the sprinter Obadele Thompson from Barbados. She has two children, one with Thompson and the other with Tim Montgomery”.
Even though Jones has never failed a drug test, and while her personal athletic performance has gradually gotten worse from 1997 onward—the reverse of what one would imagine of an athlete using performance-enhancing drugs—guilt-by-association has reasoned her to fall under the notion of using steroids. She has progressively denied this. Conceivably the public attacks on her personality have been taking toll on her; she competed inadequately in the 2004 Olympic trials, mentioning fatigue. While she qualified for the long jump, she pulled out from the 200-meter dash and didn’t meet the requirements for the 100-meter dash.
“On October 5, 2007 Jones announced her retirement from track and field after pleading guilty to Federal charges for use of performance-enhancing drugs. She also confessed to making false statements during two different government drug investigations. Jones claims that her former coach, Trevor Graham, gave her a substance he told her was flaxseed oil in 2000, but a year later discovered was the designer steroid THG, known as “the clear.” She will be sentenced on January 11, 2008 with a maximum sentence of five years. In the meantime, Jones was released from prison after yielding her United States and Belize passports to the U.S. government. In November 2007, the International Association of Athletics Federation decided that Jones must return all medals and money, including the 0,000 prize money, and forfeit all race results since September 1, 2000. Jones is officially suspended from competition until October 7, 2009.
